Mr Mikey is middle-aged, gay - and sick of being a hairdresser (sorry: colour and styling artiste!). As the owner of a hair salon in Sydney’s salubrious Balmain district, South London stylist Michael Gorman has spent three years grieving for Bryan, his late Australian lover.
He married Bryan’s sister to gain legal residency Down Under, but then lover Bry died and wife Dolly got pregnant by a dodgy boyfriend - leaving him a gay, but far from merry, widow with a wife and child to support. Together, he and Dolly have set up "Mr Mikey’s" to pay off their debts and support their strange little family.
Dolly is into cosmic guidance from The Angels - through whose powers she hopes to hook up with her soulmate and father of her child,
The Brat.
Mr Mikey’s ladies, clients of their boutique salon, sustain him with their friendship and confidences, though sometimes the salacious details of their sex lives are almost more than his refined sensibilities can take.
Suzette endures an unfulfilling marriage to Alan and yearns for her old flame David, while
Bella, the abused, demoralised wife of restaurant owner Nico, contemplates a desperate liaison. Surgically-enhanced, ageing actress
Estelle, is a sexually voracious divorcee, whilst ice-queen artist’s muse
Corinne is emotionally estranged from husband Dan. How gullible is mature student
Debra in believing her marriage to car salesman Dexter is perfect, while she aspires to be a cool, young Germaine Greer?
As he listens to their tales of love and loss, pain and pleasure, Mr Mikey has a flashbulb moment: he will weave them into a mega musical - his escape route to fame and fortune! In his spare time he starts to concoct a cosmically creative musical of choreographed numbers set to classic female pop anthems.
"The Ladies" becomes his cause celebre.
But his own emotions become just as confused as those of his ladies when handsome, straight-talking IT man Andy arrives to repair the PC on which Mr Mikey is creating his dramatic masterpiece. Andy might be a fan of musical theatre, but it seems his interest lies in
Dolly’s direction and Mr Mikey finds himself in competition with his own wife for Andy’s affections.
Does Michael achieve his ambition of getting his musical,
"The Ladies", performed at the Sydney Opera House? Suffice it to say, through the magic of Mr Mikey, or is it the powers of Dolly’s angels, the ladies - and their gentlemen - find satisfaction in every sense, even if not how they expected to.
